PUBLIC SERVICES
Voting Services
Most Americans who reside abroad are eligible to vote in U.S. elections.
Eligibility depends upon the laws of your state of legal residence.
The absentee voting process is designed to permit citizens who will
be away from their local polling places on election day to vote
by mail or electronic mail as permitted by the state. Most states
require absentee voters to request a ballot at least 60 days before
the scheduled elections.
American citizens can register to obtain an absentee ballot or
register to vote at the Consular Section, during regular working
hours. For further information and assistance you can browse www.fvap.ncr.gov.
In addition, the Voting Information Center (VIC) provides a 24-hour
recorded service with information on current and upcoming elections,
record messages from incumbent U.S. senators, U.S. representatives,
state governors and state chief election officials. Thirty days
prior to an election, messages from congressional and gubernatorial
candidates are also available. The VIC telephone numbers are (703)
588-1343.
We would like to remind all voters that they can mail their absentee
ballots through the U.S. Embassy, American Citizen Services Unit.
In addition, voters can mail their absentee ballots through the
following courier services. If using courier services, voters are
responsible for U.S. postage on the ballot or ballot request forms,
if they are not POSTAGE-PAID. Some services may offer a discount
for ballots and ballot requests. Total transit time should range
between 5 and 13 days.
