7 May 2003

The Travel Warning for Lebanon was revised on May 6, 03 to reflect that the U.S. Embassy has authorized the return to Lebanon of authorized adult dependents and non-emergency personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. The revised travel warning for Lebanon replaces the one issued on February 7, 2003.

The rest of the travel warning for Lebanon has not changed, however, and the Department of State continues to alert U.S. citizens to consider carefully the risk of travel to Lebanon. As stated in the current Middle East and North Africa Update Public Announcement and the World Wide Caution, Americans are reminded of the potential for further terrorist actions against U.S. citizens abroad, specifically in the Middle East. Terrorist groups do not distinguish between civilian and official targets. Americans in Lebanon should exercise caution and take prudent measures to maintain their security. These measures include being vigilantly aware of their surroundings, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, keeping a low profile, varying times and routes for all required travel and ensuring travel documents are current.
