The American Embassy announces the opening of the competition for the Fulbright Research Program for academic year 2005-2006. The Fulbright exchange program aims at increasing mutual understanding between the U.S. and Lebanon, and as such is an important component of the strong people-to-people ties that have always characterized our bilateral relations.

The general description of the Fulbright grants, selection procedure, and criteria for selection follows. We would note at the outset that applicants must indicate the time period necessary to complete their proposed activities. Also, Fulbright grants do not cover dependent travel costs.

Type of Grant

Research Grant: Post-doctoral Lebanese scholars are provided with the opportunity of using a U.S. university's research facilities, libraries and laboratories to conduct their individual research and/or develop a particular research project.

Eligibility requirements:

  1. Lebanese Citizenship and (some long time residents may qualify, please direct inquiries to Embassy.)
  2. Has a doctoral degree or its equivalent.
  3. Speaks and understands English with enough facility to enable him/her to carry out the proposed activity.
  4. Is a member of the teaching staff at any university in Lebanon.

NOTE: Holder of U.S. green cards/passports are not eligible for Fulbright grants.

Preference is given to those who have not received their Ph.D. degrees from a U.S. university and/or conducted research for 6 months or more, during the past 5 years, in the U.S.

Selection Procedure: All applications are reviewed by a binational review committee comprised of U.S. officials and of scholars in the field of specialization of the applicants. The review criteria are the quality of the research plan, appropriateness of academic background and adequacy of language ability. Applicants selected for an award are then affiliated with an appropriate U.S. institution.
