With the aim of promoting better understanding of American culture
and society, the U.S. Embassy exhibited a collection of 57 photographs,
"American Roadside Architecture" at three sites in Lebanon,
during the November 2004-January 2005 period. The exhibit, produced
by photographer and historian John Margolies, illustrated the early
American roadside architecture of gas stations, roadside lodging,
restaurants and eateries. Documenting a creative, whimsical and
very inviting moment in American business and tourism, the color
photos reveal changes in American lifestyles as a result of the
invention and mass production of the automobile.
The exhibit, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau
of Educational and Cultural Affairs, traveled throughout the Middle
East. In Lebanon, the exhibit was shown at the Lebanese American
University Byblos and Beirut campuses, and at Dar al Mona Batroun.
