U.S. Embassy and Amideast Announce Fulbright Scholarships for Master's Degree

10 January 2005

The U.S. Embassy and AMIDEAST announce the launching of this year's competition for the 2006 Fulbright Scholarship program. U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey D. Feltman encouraged all qualified students to apply: "The Fulbright Scholarship program is prestigious, competitive and opens doors for those who are selected. Furthermore, top ranked educational institutions in the United States are eager to welcome Lebanon's brightest students. I encourage Lebanese professionals and students interested in graduate study program to consider this excellent opportunity."

The U.S. Government, through its Fulbright Scholarship programs, funds a maximum of two academic years to obtain a master's degree at a university in the United States. Applicants may be professionals already working in their chosen field, or university students currently in their junior or senior class. The Fulbright scholarships cover expenses incurred for travel to and from the U.S., tuition, books, health insurance, and room and board. All applicants must have excellent academic records, strong English language skills, outstanding character, and a desire to use skills gained in the U.S. to serve Lebanon upon completion of their studies in the U.S. The scholarships will be administered by AMIDEAST.

The Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship Program was re-launched in Lebanon in 2000. Since then, 26 Lebanese professionals and students have been awarded these prestigious scholarships, in diverse fields of study, including architecture, economics, theater, computer engineering, geography, animal sciences, conflict resolution, psychology, public administration, applied linguistics, and international affairs.

The Fulbright Program, established in 1946, is the premier international educational program sponsored by the United States Government. Since its inception, 255,000 students and scholars - chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential - have been given the opportunity to study and teach in each other's countries, exchange ideas, and develop joint solutions to address shared concerns.
Completed applications, including required TOEFL and GRE scores and written essays are due July 15, 2004. Applicants interested in this program are encouraged to complete the application process at the earliest date possible.
