U.S. Embassy Opens U.S. University Fair:
Urges Lebanese Students to Study in America
21 February 2005
Deputy Chief of Mission for the U.S. Embassy, Christopher W. Murray
opened a U.S. University Fair, at Movenpick Hotel, on Monday, February
21, 2005, at 5:00 p.m. Representatives of 18 U.S. colleges and universities
welcomed students and their families to meet-free of charge-to learn
more about studying in the United States. The University Fair, organized
in cooperation with the U.S. Educational Group and Amideast, is
open to the public from 6:00 until 9:30 p.m. on Monday, February
21 and Tuesday, February 22, 2005.
In remarks at the opening, DCM Murray highlighted the advantages
of studying in the United States saying, "Lebanese students
who graduate from a U.S. educational institution earn a degree that
means something: It means they have received an education that prepares
them to adapt to a lifetime of challenges and change. The skills
U.S. graduates acquire won't be out of date the moment they pick
up their diploma. An American education includes a broad general
knowledge base alongside specialized studies. Our education system
emphasizes life long learning and inquiry with an emphasis on independent
thinking, intellectual integrity and interdisciplinary study."
The 18 institutions represented at Beirut's U.S. University Fair
reflect the diversity of educational options available in the United
States, including big public universities and small private colleges.
Some are located in large cities, others in small towns or rural
areas. The institutions offer hundreds of diverse degree program
options. All share a common goal of recruiting Lebanese students
to their study on their campuses. University recruiters are available
at the fair to answer questions about their programs and services,
as well as financial aid opportunities and the admissions process.
The U.S. University Fair in Beirut is the second stop on a six-country
Middle East tour, which includes Jordan (February 19), Lebanon (February
21 and 22),
Bahrain (February 24), Oman (February 26) Dubai (February 28) and
Saudi Arabia (March 6-9).
