Statement of U.S. Ambassador Following Visit To Minister Marwan
Hamadeh
01 October 2004
U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Jeffrey Feltman visited former Minister
of Economy Marwan Hamadeh at the hospital today. The Ambassador
made the following statement, "We strongly condemn the bombing
attack this morning in Beirut against former Minister of Economy
and Trade Marwan Hamadeh. Our thoughts and prayers are with the
victims and their families of this vicious attack, and we wish Minister
Hamadeh a speedy and fully recovery. Bomb attacks and violence must
not be permitted to stifle Lebanon's political debate and to intimidate
Lebanese from discussing issues of concern to Lebanon. We call on
the Lebanese authorities to investigate this attack fully and to
bring quickly the perpetrators and their backers to justice."
Ambassador Feltman added, "We take particular note that this
attack occurred on the same day when the United Nations Secretary
General plans to issue his report on UN Security Council Resolution
1559 in New York. After studying the report, the U.S. Government
will consult with other Security Council Members about how to promote
full implementation of this resolution."
