USAID Gives $184,537 to American School and Three Organizations

Beirut - September 17, 2004 - U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman and
USAID/Lebanon Mission Director Raouf Youssef presented checks to
one school and three organizations working in the fields of agriculture,
health and environment, in the total amount of $184,537.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
gave $71,287 to the American Community School (ACS) as part of its
annual funding program to the school. The school received from USAID
a total of $300,000 in the academic year 2003-2004, which covered
the school fees of 165 needy students.
The Monjez Agricultural Cooperative in Akkar received $25,000 from
USAID to purchase agricultural equipment such as greenhouse accessories,
water pumps, ploughs, cultivators and electrical generator to increase
the farmers' productivity in the village and the surrounding area.
More than 100 farmers are members of the cooperative.
In Jal El Dib, USAID assisted Hopital Psychiatrique de la Croix
with $50,000 to procure essential laboratory equipment and improve
the living facilities for patients. The hospital serves more than
2,500 patients per year from all Lebanese regions.
The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) received from USAID
$38,250 as part of a grant to implement a wastewater treatment center
in Jbaa in Nabatiyeh. The facility will benefit 6,000 residents
in Jbaa by ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment. The project
will prevent the open dumping of waste in agricultural lands and
underground water.
